My girlfriend’s brother is looking into buying an Acura RSX (DC5) as a daily driver. It will likely be a base model (because the Type-S needs premium fuel) and likely an automatic, although I’m going to try and push him towards the 5-speed. Any comments on what to look out for on these cars? Any other comments? Thanks guys!

Definitely get the 5 speed, the value retains better and it’s really just a better driving experience. I had two friends who had twins (black and white) RSX’s, they riced them and all but one was the 5 speed, the other was the auto. I found the auto boring to drive.

Steer him towards the IS300 instead. Just a much better car for the price. AND theres a sportcross model.

Check the tires. Make sure they aren’t crappy.
Make sure everything works (headlights, indicators, window regulators, cruise control, heater, a/c, windshield wipers). Check to see if it isn’t leaking oil.
The regular stuff!

I always check on forums for “common issue” threads:

Watchout for yellowed headlights.

I’ll get in line for seconds. One of these is on my short list (along with a final-generation Prelude), but I fear they’ve all been riced to death.

Just sold my base auto RSX after 2 1/2 years of owning it, it had 175k on it. Engine mounts are a good thing to check out, other than that I never had to do anything to it other than brakes and basic maintenance. Great car, super reliable, and great gas mileage. Would definitely recommend.

I’ve owned a Type S (which I sold to my sister, actually and is still running with like 220,000 miles) and one of my friends owns a Type S. The MPG really washes out the premium fuel costs. They get really good MPG either motor. The issues I had with mine personally is the interior IMO really isn’t that well made. Really cheap plastics, not great textures, etc. The leather seats will fall apart I guarantee that. Other than that I really didn’t have any complaints about it. They also literally have like no options...at all. You get what you get. Ultimately it’s their choice to go Base or S but I’d say S personally. Also don’t forget the EP3 Civic Si, they are practically the same as a base RSX.
